Harry Potter Magic Spells
Today is the movie premiere of the movie, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince. I’m so excited to watch the movie so while waiting for the right time to see it, I’ve gathered some Harry Potter spells, here is the list.
Accio – Brings an item to a person. It is spoken, often followed by the object the person wants afterward, as in “Accio broomstick.” It also can summon objects when said alone if the person concentrates upon them hard enough or is an experienced wizard.
Alohomora – Unlocking spell, effctive on doors, windows and locks. Hermione used to help her, Ron and Harry get away from Peeves in the “Midnight Duel” sequence (Sorcercer’s Stone).
Aparecium – Makes invisible things reappear again. Hermione tries to get the words Tom Riddle wrote in his diary by trying this spell on it in Chamber.
Avada Kedavra – The worst spell of all … the Killing Curse. Instantly kills the victim. One of the three “Unforgivable Curses,” banned by wizarding law, and punishable by up to life in Azkaban.
Avis – A spell that releases a small flock of birds from the end of a wand.
Cruciatus Curse – A spell that inflicts severe pain upon the victim. Invoked by saying “Crucio!” One of the three “Unforgivable Curses.”
Confundus – A spell to totally confuse a person’s mind and cause him or her to lose their memory. Thanks to Ron’s backfiring wand, Gilderoy Lockhart gets hit with this one, instead of Harry, Ron and Ginny (COS).
Conjuctivitis Curse – A spell that causes the eyes to blinded, burning and red. Conjunctivitis in the Muggle world is a bacterial disease that causes the eyes to become very red, irritated and crusty; it’s commonly called “pink eye.”
Deletrius – Erases the effects of a spell.
Densaugeo – Makes the teeth grow very quickly and very long. Hermione accidentally gets hit with this one in GOF.
Diffindo – Causes something to tear open or apart, as when Harry uses this spell to make Cedric Diggory’s bag rip open (GOF).
Dissendium – A spell that opens a passageway leading downward. Harry uses this one to enter the secret tunnel that leads to Hogsmeade in POA.
Engorgio – Causes something to grow to huge proportions, as when (fake) Alastor Moody makes a spider grow “larger than a tarantula” in GOF.
Ennervate – This spell causes an unconscious person to awaken. It was effective when a captured person (or elf) needed to be questioned in GOF.
Expecto Patronum – A spell to counteract the severe draining effects of dementors, and usually mastered only by wizards of advanced skill. A Patronus is a shield-like concentration of energy that stands between the wizard and the dementor. It knocks out the dementor and protects the wizard. Harry uses one to save himself and his friends from the dementors in POA. It is shaped like a stag, the animal James Potter could become as an Animagus.
Expelliarmus – The Disarming Spell. Dislodges an weapon from another person’s hand. Gilderoy Lockhart failed at effectively demonstrating this spell in Chamber of Secrets.
Ferula – Produces bandages to bind up injuries.
Fidelius Charm – “A very complex spell,” as Professor Flitwick describes in POA, used to magically hide a secret inside one person. Harry’s parents used it to place the secret of where their house was inside Sirius Black, to keep Lord Voldemort from coming after them. Eventually the secret and spell were moved to Peter Pettigrew, a move that proved fatal (POA).
Finite Incantatem – A spell to stop another spell’s effects.
Furnunculus Curse – Causes fungus-like boils to appear on the skin. This one accidentally hit Goyle in a duel with Malfoy, after it ricocheted. Harry also used it on Crabbe near the end of GOF when Malfoy was harassing him and his friends.
Hover Charm – This causes objects to float. Dobby the Elf performs this on Aunt Petunia’s pudding, which gets Harry blamed for committing magic as an underaged wizard, and nearly expelled from Hogwarts (Chamber of Secrets).
Impedimenta – Causes the victim to freeze up completely. Harry stops a blast-ended skrewt with this spell in the last Triwizard challenge.
Imperius – Gives the wizard who casts this spell total control over the victim, like a puppet master with a marionette. Invoked by saying “Imperio.” One of the three Unforgivable Curses.
Incendio – Starts a fire. Mr. Weasley uses this one to get a fire going in the Dursley fireplace in Goblet of Fire for Floo power travel.
Jiggery pokery, squiggly wiggly – Fake pig spell that Harry threatens Dudley with in COS. Dudley still remembered the pigtail Hagrid gave him in TSS!
Locomotor mortis – or the “Lock Legs” spell. It causes a person’s legs to freeze up; a little less intense than Petrificus totalis.
Lumos – causes the end of a magic wand to light up like a flashlight (called a “torch” in England!) Good for illuminating dark rooms.

Nox – Turns off the lighted end of a wand; opposite of Lumos.
Obliviate – Spell that throws a bomb-like force at the victim. Lockhart fails to use this spell to eliminate Ron and Harry, but has a ceiling fall on himself because he used Ron’s damaged wand in Chamber.
Orchideus – Causes a bouquet of flowers to come out of the end of a wand.
Peskypiksi Pesternomi – A spell that is supposed to supposed to catch and stop pixies from committing mischief against people. Gilderoy fails with this spell to prevent an overrun of the little creatures in his classroom in COS.
Petrificus Totalis – or the “Full Body Bind” spell. Causes the victim to become totally immobile and rigid. Neville gets hit with this one in TSS after he tries to stop the three friends from trying to find the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Point Spell – Turns a magic wand into a compass. It is activated by saying “Point me.” Harry uses it to navigate the hedge maze in the final Triwizard challenge (GOF).
Prior Incantatus – Applied to a magic wand, it will replay the most recent spell cast by the wand. Used by Amos Diggory to verify that Harry’s wand was used to send up the Dark Mark (GOF).
Quietus – Spell to make an extremely loud voice return to normal, as Ludo Bagman did at the end of the Quidditch World Cup final. Opposite spell to Sonorus.
Reducio – Opposite of the Engorgio spell; makes something shrink back to normal size.
Relashio – Spell name comes from Latin “to release.” The spell itself releases red sparks from the end of the wand. When used under water, it causes the water to boil. Harry tries to use this against grindylows that have captured him in Hogwarts Lake (GOF).
Reparo – A fixing spell … just the think to make a pair of broken, taped glasses like new again.
Rictusempra – Tickling Spell. The victim is so overwhelmed by the tickling sensation that it causes him breathing difficulty, as Draco experienced after Harry hit him in COS.
Riddikulus – A spell that makes an item or creature look totally silly. By directing this spell at a boggart, students were able to make the shape-shifting creature so goofy that they laughed it away (POA).

Serpensortia – Produces a snake that will come out of the end of the wand. Draco uses this spell to send a snake after Harry in their COS duel.
Severing Charm – Causes two things to be separated, as when Ron used it to remove the frilly lace off his old dress robe in GOF.
Slug Spell – Causes the victim to cough up an almost endless supply of slugs. When Ron tries to get Draco Malfoy with this spell, his wand backfires, and he ends up with the slug problem himself (COS).
Sonorus – Makes the voice become extremely amplified, as if talking into a microphone. This is how Ludo Bagman does the announcing at the Quidditch World Cup. Voice is returned to normal with Quietus spell.
Stupefy – Stunning spell. that knocks out and immobilizes the victim. Wizards on patrol the night the Dark Mark is released at the Quidditch World Cup use it to try and stop the person set off the symbol (GOF).
Tarantallegra – A dancing spell that Draco uses against Harry in their wand duel in COS, which causes the victim to perform a rapid quickstep.
