Adobe releases Photoshop Lightroom 2
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for Mac and Windows lets professional photographers import, manage and present large numbers of digital photographs. Its foundation is Adobe’s own Camera Raw technology, with support provided for a vast array of native raw file formats, as well as JPEG and TIFF. Imported files can be converted to Digital Negative specification (DNG) format or renamed and sorted by folder or date. It also provides presentation capabilities for showcasing images in print or via dynamic slideshows and interactive web galleries.
Photoshop Lightroom 2 has been available as an open beta since April of this year, following an approach begun with version 1. Version 2 provides a large jump in functionality and performance, and is touted by Adobe as being its first application to support 64-bit for Mac OS X 10.5 Macintosh and the 64-bit version of Windows Vista, which in both cases can lead to improved memory performance when dealing with large images.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 can be purchased on the Adobe site for $299, with demo versions also available for download. [Graphics.com]
Cuil: World’s Biggest, Faster and Smartest Search Engine?
An Internet start-up led by former star Google engineers has unveiled a new web search service that sells itself as the world’s biggest search engine. It aims to outdo Google in size, although it faces an uphill battle changing surfing habits. Cuil (pronounced “cool”) is offering a service at cuil.com that it says can index - faster and more cheaply - a far larger portion of the web than Google.
The Google rival says its service goes beyond usual search techniques that focus on web links and traffic patterns. Instead it analyses the context of each page and users’ requests. Cuil was founded by search pioneers, including Mr. Tom Costello and wife, Anna Patterson.

The Spam King Edward Davidson escaped
The notorious e-mail spammer Edward “Eddie” Davidson who was senteced to jail time in April has escaped from a federal prison camp in Florence, Colorado. Davidson made a run when his wife visited him last Sunday.
Davidson was housed in a minimum security facility. Minimum security institutions, also known as Federal Prison Camps (FPCs), have dormitory housing, a relatively low staff-to-inmate ratio, and are work and program-oriented. FPCs are generally located adjacent to larger institutions, where inmates help serve the labor needs of the larger institution.
On April 28, 2008, Davidson was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Marcia S. Krieger to serve 21 months (just under 2 years) in federal prison. Judge Krieger also ordered him to pay $714,139 in restitution to the IRS. As part of the restitution, Davis has agreed to forfeit property he purchased, including gold coins (which the IRS is selling today), with the ill gotten proceeds of his offense.

World’s famous hacker Kevin Mitnick now has a book deal
Kevin Mitnick has signed a book deal with Little, Brown and Company, giving him the opportunity to refute the outrageous claims made against him—really, he could start a nuclear war by whistling into a telephone?—while making a few dollars in the process. A tell-all, if you will.
Mitnick, who was released in 2001 after serving five years in jail, announced that he has a contract to write his life story and showed a preview for a reality-based TV series in development in which he would test corporate networks by trying to break into them. As part of his plea agreement, he was banned from writing a tell-all until 2007. He also runs a security consulting firm and lectures.
Mitnick, if you don’t already know and didn’t bother to watch the movie, is probably the most famous “hacker” out there, imprisoned in 1999 for destroy the Western World for all time. So we were led to believe, that is. Watch the documentary Freedom Downtime on Google Video.
